Trump-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy wants to privatize the USPS.

His plan is to slow-down mail delivery even more and raise prices again and again. He would rather close locations, sell off sorting equipment, and reduce operating hours than find new ways to bring in money and strengthen the postal service.

That’s why millions of us made our voices heard and demanded that Congress save the post office by passing the Postal Service Reform Act. Congress delivered and now the USPS can partner with federal, state, and local governments to bring in new revenue by offering new products and services.

The problem is Louis DeJoy refuses to implement these critical changes needed to save the post office. He, and the USPS Board of Governors, need to know we are paying attention. Add your name now!

In a recent Board of Governors meeting, DeJoy blamed inflation and proclaimed he will continue to raise postal rates to help pay off USPS’ outstanding debt. According to DeJoy, the Postal Service Reform Act helps with red ink, but the agency will still need to cut $160 billion worth of debt over the next 10 years.

DeJoy can’t cut his way out of debt. Providing less and doing it slower is not a long term business model for success. Dejoy’s plan leads to selling off critical assets and closing locations, sending the USPS into a death spiral that inevitably leads to privatization.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Congress authorized the selling of new products, like bus and subway passes, and new services like check cashing and WiFi access. New services could include everything from picking up a hunting license to paying off a parking ticket. Delivery services could include checking in on seniors, census outreach and grocery or pharmacy delivery. Locations could offer verification for social security and EBT cards, and even electric vehicle charging stations.

A vision for USPS’s future should build on the postal service’s history of serving every community, no matter how remote, and its long history of providing jobs that create a pathway to the Black middle class. It should include bringing back postal banking and other services to meet unmet needs, particularly in BIPOC and rural communities, all while also generating the new revenue needed to strengthen and sustain it for decades to come.

The list of possible services and products is long, and a true leader at the helm as Postmaster General would take the Postal Service Reform Act as a mandate to innovate and find new sources of revenue for a new century.

The post office has served as a lifeline for many people, including rural and Tribal communities, across the country for more than a century. We must stop Louis DeJoy from destroying it in a decade.
