Thank you for calling your Democratic Senator. Please tell us how it went.

UPDATE #2 (December 7, 2016 13:06 PT): The GOP backed down on the continuing resolution, meaning Mattis’ appointment won’t sail through the way they wanted—and that the government’s doors will stay open.

As of now, Democrats will still be able to filibuster the appointment during the confirmation process. Please continue contacting your senator(s) and urging them to filibuster the waiver Gen. Mattis needs to serve as secretary of state.

UPDATE (December 7, 2016 8:09 PT): The GOP has responded to Sen. Gillibrand's filibuster threat in the most Republican way possible: Once again, they’re threatening to shut down the government.

In order to fund the government, Congress must pass a continuing resolution by Friday—and Republicans have attached the waiver Gen. Mattis needs to serve as Trump's secretary of defense. In other words, if they don’t get their way on Mattis, they’ll shut down the government.

Even if you have already placed a call to your senator(s), please make another one and tell them to filibuster the waiver and oppose any GOP attempts to attach it to the continuing resolution.

Thank you for taking the time to call your Democratic Senator(s) and urging them to filibuster the waiver Gen. Mattis needs to become secretary of defense. Your activism will help block this Trump administration nominee.

Hi, I'm (say your name) from (say from where you're calling). I'm calling today to urge my senator to filibuster the waiver Gen. Mattis needs to become secretary of defense. Civilian control of the military is a bedrock foundation of any democracy, and it’s more important than ever to uphold it now that we have a president-elect dead set on eroding constitutional norms. Thank you.
