Sign the petition: Keep Trump Off Facebook

The day after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol Facebook suspended Donald Trump from its platform for using it "to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government."

But now, less than two years later, Meta Platforms executive Nick Clegg is telling reporters that they may soon reinstate Trump’s Facebook account, and that they would consult experts and weigh the risk of public harm before making a final decision.

That’s absurd. It doesn’t take an expert to know that Donald Trump has continued to use other social media platforms and his public appearances to spread disinformation about elections and threats of violence, and he’d continue doing the same thing on Facebook if given the opportunity.

In fact, just a few days after Clegg’s comments, Trump stooped to a new low on his Truth Social platform. In a disjointed rant about the Green New Deal, Trump wrote that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell "has a DEATH WISH" and that he "must immediately seek help and advice from his China loving wife, Coco Chow."

With violent and racist rhetoric like that, it should be obvious to Nick Clegg, Mark Zuckerberg and all other Facebook executives that reinstating Donald Trump’s Facebook account would be bad for Facebook and bad for our Democracy.

When Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the decision to restrict Donald Trump’s account on January 7, 2021, he wrote:

"His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world. We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect -- and likely their intent -- would be to provoke further violence."

Zuckerberg and other decision makers at Facebook should follow the same standard today and refuse to reinstate Trump’s account due to the likelihood that he will use it to challenge legitimate election results and provoke further violence.

Add your name to the petition now if you agree that Facebook should not reinstate Donald Trump’s account under any circumstances.
