Since the 2009 coupwhich overthrew democracy and installed a brutal and corrupt regime, Honduras has become a test site for market-driven labor and resource exploitation to benefit global corporations and elites. The fallout has poisoned the land and violated fundamental human rights.
However, wherever multinational capital goes, resistance grows, and women are at the forefront. On this tour we will learn from, support, and accompany women in resistance while we learn about their struggles. We’ll travel from beautiful mountainous Santa Barbara whose environment and Lenca people are threatened by dam and mining projects, to Choloma where maquila workers make our clothes and resist sweatshop conditions, to the Caribbean and the Port of Cortes to understand the supply chains and dip in at Honduras’s beautiful northern beaches, to Vallecito, a reclaimed model community of the afro-indigenous Garifuna people, threatened by tourist expansion, the palm oil barons and narco traffickers.
We’ll ask what feminism means in Honduras. The role of women leaders in the context of traditional societies and modern challenges, and how leaders are developed. We’ll assess the needs of the groups we visit and decide as a delegation about the work we will do to support their struggles when we return home. This is a delegation for activists.
