The Makerfield by-election is an existential battle in another previously 'safe' Labour seat. With possible leadership of the country, and the most pragmatic future for a fair voting system hanging in the balance, it is essential we mobilise progressive voters.
Support the campaign
Andy Burnham is the clear tactical vote to stop Reform UK in Makerfield.
He is also one of the strongest advocates of Proportional Representation at general elections.
Lib Dem and Green supporters should absolutely get behind him.
It's clear that if he wins in Makerfield, he could one day become Labour leader.
This moment may represent one of the best opportunities in years to deliver this critical development, where we would no longer have to vote tactically any more, but for the party whose policies we want to see in the world.
Donate nowForward Democracy is already campaigning for Andy Burnham. Our message has been amplified by campaigns, influencers, and prominent anti-fascists such as our friend Carol Vorderman.
A number of our core team have been up in the constituency to campaign locally, and we have emailed over 6,500 tactical voters from our list who live near Makerfield, with opportunities to help the ground campaigns:
- With Hope Not Hate, who are distributing a letter from Carol Vorderman to the women of Makerfield, concerning the sexism and misogyny that is rampant through Reform's policy – and its candidate Robert Kenyon's disgusting social media comments
- With the Labour and Co-operative party campaign itself, out in force, listening to and canvassing the voters who will decide this by-election
Help us take it further
We think it's important that the voters of Makerfield are heard around the country on more than just the question of which candidate they support. So we are putting everything we can into making the news cycle work for progressives.
- The media responds to polls. As in Gorton & Denton, we believe a constituency poll will help – but this time it will be about voters' opinions on hot topics that rarely get a look in. Sexism, Brexit, and yes, leadership.
- Our core volunteer team has brought in a comms specialist used to Westminster to help get stories into the press and hopefully own the news cycle.
- We will continue to advertise to get the right messages to the voters who need to see them.
