The IWGB (Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain) and its members have been shocked to see the floods in Pakistan. We express our solidarity with all those affected, mourning the dead, injured, and displaced during the crisis. With a third of the country underwater we know that this crisis will continue long after the headlines end.
As a migrant workers’ union with members from Pakistan and across the world, we understand the importance of international solidarity. As the catastrophe continues to unfold, we know that many more workers in Pakistan and the global south will bear the brunt of global heating and climate breakdown.
The IWGB has made a donation from the union to those affected. We will publicise the crisis among our membership, and we are sharing this fundraiser with members and supporters for further donations.
We will be sending money to Al Khidmat, one of Pakistan's leading non-profit organisations, currently operating a network of thousands of volunteers working in every flooded area. Every penny will go towards those in need as a result of this crisis.
The extent of this crisis is a sharp reminder that this disaster is only one of the many we will face in the coming years. The climate emergency that workers face around the world is the direct result of failures by governments like Britain in the global north that are refusing to implement changes that are urgently needed. Given the history of Britain, more is urgently needed to fight climate change and ensure a just transition for all workers, regardless of where they are in the world.
