For over 30 years a Fuel Storage Tank Farm owned by 6 international oil companies was located in East Austin. The ground water contamination, soil contamination, and air pollution
caused extremely high cancer rate, respiratory issues, and contaminated the environment for the low-income African American and Latino community nearby. PODER and EAST led the fight
to sue the six oil giants for their contamination and won. It took 15 years to clean up! In 2022 the city of Austin has approved the building of another Tank Farm, to hold fuel for the airport, 430 ft away from a low- income communities of color. PODER is working with community members to fundraise for potential legal challenges to fight the perpetuation
of environmental racism.
