Alabama is a queer state.
From the way people talk about us, you might not think so. Too often our politicians dismiss, hurt, and trample us to win votes and distract from the ways they have sold our communities off to
the highest bidder. Even growing LGBTQ representation in media (while
great!) has usually ignored us, preferring stories set in big cities on the coasts instead.
Nobody is going to heal this state for us. Nobody is going to tell our stories if we don’t. So we’re taking it upon ourselves. We are a collective of Alabama queer folks organizing Alabama queer folks, and
we’re not quitting until this state hears from and does right by every
LGBTQ person in Alabama. And that means every LGBTQ person: in our
fullness, in our skins, in our bodies, in our hometowns. Alabama must be made new.
#OurQueerAlabama is a volunteer-driven, homespun movement. We are fighting to pass nondiscrimination legislation in local communities across the state, and in order for us to succeed, we need your support!
Your dollars will go toward canvassing supplies for volunteers knocking on strangers’ doors to talk about LGBTQ rights (it can be as difficult as it sounds - the least we can do is make sure nobody’s sunburned and hungry by the end). It will go toward printing costs, data tools for mobilizing our communities, and travel expenses for meeting and organizing with LGBTQ people all across Alabama as we pursue our ultimate goal of achieving the protections for LGBTQ Alabamians that our state does not currently provide.
Alabama won’t change on its own, and we can’t get free for free. We hope you’ll support us. We hope you’ll join us. We hope you’ll commit to making the Alabama we all need and deserve, too.
