The Ward 3 Mutual Aid team is part of the DC Mutual Aid Network, a grassroots citywide response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mutual aid is direct support among neighbors: from March to September, the Ward 3 team has answered over 1600 calls on our community hotline, and made over 950 grocery deliveries in our ward. We provide about $2550 of free groceries and 40 hot meals to our Ward 3 neighbors every week, plus we commit an additional average of $650 a week to supporting other wards.
We want to continue and expand our work, but six months into the pandemic our finances are often uncertain week to week. Several times, we have temporarily closed the hotline while we fundraised.
As a grassroots cooperative organization, our goal is for every one of our members & supporters to make a monthly contribution -- and join our organizing! We may each have little to give, but all together we are powerful!
If 1,000 neighbors across our ward each gave somewhere between $5 and $100 a month, we would have a generous and reliable budget to take care of groceries and so much more. Imagine the possibilities for us expand our support: both within our ward, and to our neighbors across the city!
