Heidelberg Women's March

WHO WE ARE AND WHY WE MARCH (and do other stuff, too!)

We are women from all parts of society who say “Yes” to equality and equal opportunities for men, women, and individuals of all gender identities. Together, we stand up for the rights of those in the LGBTQIA community, for religious, racial, and ethnic minorities, and for people with disabilities.

Nearly 1600 people joined us Heidelberg Women’s Marchers at our 2017 and 2018 marches, taking to the streets to stand for what we believe in. Marching with our life partners, children, friends and neighbors, we demonstrate in defense of our rights, our safety, our freedom of speech and our families, and to advocate for peace.

We welcome all people who want to take a stand for freedom of religion, human rights and intersectionality.  We invite all who believe in environmental protection, racial and economic justice, women’s sexual and reproductive rights. We lift our voices with those directly affected by sexual violence and call for an end to the implicit acceptance of such behaviors across society.

We are loosely affiliated with Global Women's March and the US-based March On umbrella organizations. Heidelberg, Germany, in Europe and around the world in the spirit of democracy and in recognition of those who have dedicated many years of their lives to fighting for human rights, human dignity, justice and equality.  We send a clear message to the world: WOMEN’S RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS.

The rise of international populism, a resurgence of xenophobia and the global rejection of multiculturalism has left many people feeling insulted, terrorized, and vilified. We are united by the understanding that when we stand up for those on the margins of our society, we all become stronger. We seek to adhere to Kingian principles of non-violence in all that we do.

When we are not organizing a Women's March event, a core group of Heidelberg Women's March organizers work in ways large and small behind the scenes in our community here in Heidelberg and beyond. We mentor folks who are interested in changing something in their communities but aren't sure where or how to begin. We accept invitations to speak to organizations about our experiences as activists, and about the Women's March more broadly. We liaise with organizations whose goals and methods are allied with our own, offering support however we can. We also host a Huddle - a mostly online (but sometimes IRL) group of folks who are (or would like to be) engaged in the local activist communities. If you think you might like to help plan a future Heidelberg Women's March, the Huddle would be a good place for you, too.  To join, find "Heidelberg Huddle" on Facebook and request to join the closed group (by clicking on the button there).  And, finally, we use our Facebook page and Twitter feed to inform folks about allied organizations and events in and near Heidelberg and any other information that we find meaningful with respect to the goals mentioned above, and which we think HD Women's Marchers would like to know about. (We have in the past sent out a newsletter, which is currently on semi-permanent hiatus.)

(Beware fake "Heidelberg Women's March" pages and sites - there are a lot out there, especially from people wholly unaffiliated with us trying to sell t-shirts and other swag. We are non-profit!)
