Over the last 35 years, the long-tailed macaque population is estimated to have declined by about 80% and the pig-tailed macaque population by at least 50%.

The animal experimentation industry has pushed these two species of monkeys to the brink of extinction, and they are currently trying to further increase their use of nonhuman primates.
