Ask our lawmakers to pass earned sick days

With just days left in session, send a message today!

Everyone gets sick. But without earned sick days, working families have to decide if they can afford to miss a day of work to get care for themselves and their loved ones. No one should have to decide if they can stay home with a sick child, or if they can take the morning off to bring an elderly parent to the doctor. Without the protection that the earned sick days bill would bring, workers can even be fired for calling out sick.

Nearly 170,000 workers in our state are unable to earn a single sick day. That’s why it’s so important that we pass this common sense workplace protection this year. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and other states and cities across the country have already passed earned sick day policies and they are seeing the benefits. It’s time for Rhode Island to step up for our working families.

With just days left in our state’s legislative session, these messages are urgent. Truly, it’s up to all of us to make sure that our lawmakers are looking out for working people in Rhode Island.

Corporate lobbyists are doing everything they can to gut bill. They want to weaken it to exclude thousands of workers or drastically cut the number of days it will provide. But lawmakers, not lobbyist make the final decision, so they need to hear from you that you are watching and expect them to be champions for working families.

Many legislators already support the policy and will appreciate knowing their constituents have their backs. Others are on the fence, and it’s critical that they hear that voters expect them to keep the wellbeing of families their priority.

The Healthy and Safe Families and Workplaces act would allow all workers in the state to earn seven days of paid sick time to use to care for themselves or their loved ones.

82.5% Rhode Islanders support this bill. That’s not surprising. What would be surprising is if our elected leaders did not do everything to pass this common sense bill this year. Sick day policies have been passed in many cities and states including in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Vermont. These jurisdictions are already seeing the benefits of the popular policies with no negative impact on their economies. You can learn more about the bill at riearnedsickdays.org.
