Ask your Rep. to sign letter to Trump: Keep Susiya standing!

On November 21st, the Government of Israel submitted its official position to the High Court of Israel, stating its intent to demolish 20% of the structures in Susiya on or after December 6th. It also gave notice that any structures that are changed in any way, without exception (even for urgent humanitarian needs), will be demolished immediately. In response, Rep. Eshoo is gathering signatures on a House-side letter to President Trump, asking that he intervene to prevent demolition. Ask your Representative to sign the letter. The text is below:

Dear Mr. President,

We write to call your attention to an urgent matter that may irreversibly harm the efforts of your Administration to foster peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel just announced its intention to demolish 20 percent of the Palestinian village of Susiya in Area C of the West Bank on or after December 6, 2017.

Three years ago, Susiya’s villagers petitioned Israel's High Court to overturn the Israeli Army's denial of Susiya’s Master Zoning Plan in an effort to gain the right to plan and live on the land they own in the West Bank. However, rather than allowing the High Court to consider Susiya’s petition, the Israeli government is moving to demolish 20 percent of the village of Susiya which will displace approximately 100 Palestinians, half of whom are children, just as the coldest months of the year approach.

Several of us wrote to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on October 12th urging him to work with his counterparts in Israel to prevent the demolition of the village of Susiya. The State Department responded on November 3rd that “[a]s the Administration continues to explore the best means of making progress towards a comprehensive peace agreement to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the President has urged both leaders to refrain from taking actions which could undermine that goal.”

We urge you to work with Israel to prevent these imminent demolitions and allow Israel’s High Court to hear Susiya’s petition for the basic right to plan, build, and live safely on their land before portions of the village are demolished. We thank you in advance for your attention to this urgent matter and look forward to your timely response.

Sincerely,

Anna G. Eshoo
