Three former sheriff’s deputies in Bibb County, Georgia were arrested after investigators said they abused Flock license-plate cameras to track people they had personal relationships with.

Flock gives participating agencies access to a vast network of cameras capable of identifying vehicles and tracing where they have been spotted. Roughly 7,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide already contract with the company, putting this powerful surveillance capability in the hands of thousands of officers.

The Georgia arrests expose the fundamental risk. Once local governments build these systems and give officers access, enormous amounts of information about ordinary people’s movements can be searched by individuals with the power to misuse it. Other reported cases have involved officers tracking romantic partners and using Flock information for deeply personal purposes.

States do not have to keep allowing this expansion. Governors and state legislatures can prohibit municipalities, counties, and local law enforcement agencies from entering into new Flock contracts or renewing existing ones.

Our movements should not be stored in a surveillance system that government employees can turn against the people in their own lives.
