BoH Repeal the KC Helmet Law
Reporting and research have shown that police disproportionately issue helmet citations to homeless, Black, Indigenous, and Hispanic/Latino bicyclists. Advocates found that the law is too often used by police to stop bicyclists for unrelated investigatory purposes, rather than good-faith education about helmet use. Helmet citations have also been issued punitively. In one clear example, police ticketed a Real Change vendor after he was struck by a vehicle while riding a bike. Repeal of the helmet law is the only way to ensure that both unjust ticketing and traumatic and potentially dangerous police stops will no longer occur.
