Canada must attend the historic first meeting of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)

Tell your MP that Canada must support the global movement to abolish nuclear weapons!

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017. It is a landmark global agreement that reinforces the URGENT need for nuclear disarmament.

The historic first meeting of states parties to the Treaty will take place in Vienna, Austria from 21st to the 23rd June 2022 . Canada has no plans to attend. The Government of Canada boycotted the entire drafting process for the Treaty and the UN conference that adopted it, even though over 70% of Canadians want Canada to join the Treaty.

Global support has steadily increased since 2017 and currently the Treaty has been signed by 86 countries, of which 61 have also ratified it. With this international support, the Treaty came into force in January 2021 and nuclear weapons are now illegal.

While the Government of Canada still refuses to sign and ratify the the Treaty, Canada could attend the meeting as an observer -- as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, and Switzerland have already committed to do.

Please use our template letter and ask your Member of Parliament to urge Foreign Affairs Minister Joly to send a Canadian delegation to Vienna. By attending this historic meeting, Canada will send a signal of hope to our global community, re-affirming its commitment to our common future and that of generations to come!
