Congress, Press Israel to Free Ahmad Manasra
Ahmed Manasra is now back in solitary confinement following his urgent transfer to a prison hospital due to deteriorating mental health in prolonged solitary confinement. The UN states that Solitary longer than 15 days is torture - Ahmed spent over 7 months in solitary confinement.
- Though he was a child when arrested, the court delayed his trial until he was 14 to intentionally try him as an adult.
- On June 22, 2022 the Special Release Committee illegally applied a law that did not exist at the time of his arrest for the purpose of continuing to hold him as an adult. This is especially troubling because even from the very start, on May 10, 2016, the court determined that 13 year old Ahmad was not the one who stabbed the victims.
- On June 28th the Special Release Committee was scheduled to reevaluate the possibility for his release because of his health condition. They refused to hear arguments from his lawyer because based on the application of that law, the committee argued they had no jurisdiction to consider his compassionate release. Ahmad's lawyer is planning to appeal.
The Israeli Prison Authority has requested that the Court extend the solitary confinement of Ahmed Manasra for another six months. The Court was scheduled to make their decision on July 12th, 2022, but rescheduled for August 16.
Ask Congress to act now to press for Ahmad Manasra's immediate release on humanitarian grounds.
