Contact your MO Representative and Senator to introduce yourself before the 2018 session!

Write and/or call your State Senator and Representative, introduce yourself and ask to meet for a coffee, see if they are holding any public events or just ask to sit down with them before session starts in January.

December 1st, 2017 our elected officials were able to start the pre-file process where they file the bills that will be debated, passed and possibly become law starting in January 2018.  We encourage all Missourians to read through some of the bills being proposed then contact your state Senator and Representative to introduce yourself before they leave for Jefferson City in January.

You can learn more about the bills being pre-filed here:

Senate: http://www.senate.mo.gov/18info/BTS_Web/BillList.aspx?SessionType=R

House: http://house.mo.gov/LegislationSP.aspx?report=billlist

Some key points to remember about the bill process:

  • Bill pre-filing begins on December 1 when members can pre-file bills that they would like to be introduced at the beginning of the legislative session. Pre-filing a bill does not mean the bill will be considered during session.

  • There are many prefiled bills. To help sort through them, concentrate on bills that have been filed by your senator or representative or bills that are on topics that are important to you.

  • When introduced, a bill is assigned a number and read the first time by its number and title only by the House reading clerk. It then goes on the calendar for second reading; following second reading it is assigned to committee by the Speaker of the House.

  • A public hearing is the next step in the process after being assigned to a committee.

  • The committee will then vote on the bill to determine if the bill will be voted on further.

  • If it is passed by both the House and the Senate, the Governor receives the bill to sign into law.

Sample Call Script:
