Cook County: follow Pritzker's order & STOP the evictions!

UPDATE 6/29/20: Earlier this month, the Cook County Board of Commissioners joined the call to #StopFilings by passing Resolution # 20-2891! The resolution calls on the Circuit Court of Cook County and the Illinois Supreme Court to dismiss and seal all eviction cases filed during the pandemic, and to require landlords to swear they are following Illinois' emergency eviction rules before they can file any new evictions.

But there's still more work to do - this is only a nonbinding resolution, so we have to make sure the Courts are still hearing our demands to #StopFilings! If you have not done so  already, please SEND letters to the Circuit Court of Cook County - and if you've already done that, there is now the option to send a letter to the Illinois Supreme Court too. Keep the pressure on and demand that the courts comply with Gov. Prizkers order to #StopFilings during the pandemic!

UPDATE 5/21/20: In a letter to Circuit Court Clerk Brown and Chief Judge Evans, legal experts at Beyond Legal Aid have affirmed that Governor Pritzker's April 23rd Executive Order does mean that landlords should not be allowed to file evictions in Illinois - and that the Circuit Court of Cook County has the power to enforce this by closing filings! We have the law on our side, we just have to make our voices heard! Send a letter and share this action now!

After thousands of Illinois residents made their voices heard, Governor Pritzker finally expanded Illinois' eviction moratorium with his April 23rd executive order! The old order, which prevented eviction enforcement, is still in effect, but has now been expanded to prohibit the filing of evictions except in special circumstances.  While the fight to #CancelRent rolls on, the state is starting to meet our demands because they recognize the power of organized tenants.

However, as of today, the Cook County Circuit Court is still filing evictions. It is unjust and unsafe to jeopardize our right to secure housing during a pandemic. Help us ask Chief Judge Timothy Evans, First Municipal District Presiding Judge E. Kenneth Wright, Jr. and Court Clerk Dorothy Brown to comply with the governor’s order and halt eviction filings!

Having an eviction filing on your record can make it difficult to find safe housing in the future, even if you’re protected from physical eviction under the stay-at-home order. Freezing eviction filings will protect thousands of tenants who can’t pay their rent and is a big win, but not if Cook County Circuit Court refuses to comply!
