Defend Professors - Email Your Legislators Today!

We need to pass the Adjunct Pilot Program (H.1434/ S.934) so that long underpaid, overworked and disrespected adjunct faculty workers get the job security, benefits and wages they deserve.

Adjunct faculty are professors who are paid by the class and lack decent pay, stability and benefits such as healthcare. Adjunct faculty's dismal conditions don't just hurt them and their families: they also hurt student learning outcomes.

Two thirds of adjuncts earn less than $50,000 per year with all other jobs combined, while 25 percent of adjuncts earn less than $25,000 per year. According to one survey, two thirds of part-time adjunct professors received no retirement plans or health insurance.

A 2023 study of Massachusetts community colleges found a strong relationship between students' low graduation rates and the poor treatment of adjunct faculty. For students to get the best education possible, they need professors with the best treatment possible.

Want to help us end the abuse of adjunct faculty and make MA colleges work better for everyone? Then send our pre-written letter to Massachusetts lawmakers and urge them to support the Adjunct Pilot Program!

The Adjunct Pilot Program bill would establish a trial program to directly improve adjunct professors’ quality of life through benefits including healthcare, promotion opportunities and improved resources.

All at the cost of just $6 million over three years (in other words, just .02 percent of the $3 billion Massachusetts made from the Millionaires' Tax -- a drop in the bucket!).

This is an achievable goal that can push forward the fight for equity in the state.
