Don't Cut Composition at CCNY

Provost Liss is trying to change the designation of composition courses from 4 faculty workload hours to 3. This means wages for part time faculty will be cut by 20% for doing the same work, and full time faculty will have 33% higher workloads.

The professional recommendation for composition courses is 15 students per class as an ideal, with 20 as the maximum for a quality educational experience. Additionally, writing instructors are supposed to teach no more than 60 students at a time. Course caps at CCNY are 26 for ENGL 11000 and 28 for ENGL 21000, and full time faculty already teach more than 80 students per semester. This hurts faculty AND students, since faculty will be more overworked/underpaid and students will receive less individualized attention and feedback on their writing.
