Don't Let New Hampshire Fall Into The Kansas Tax Cut Budget Trap

Governor Hassan and people of
New Hampshire need your help!

The Republicans in our State Legislature are trying to override the Governor's veto to preserve their unnecessary tax cuts, tax cuts that would lead New Hampshire in the wrong direction.

The NH House and Senate cut business taxes claiming these cuts would "attract businesses and stimulate the economy."

Other states have attempted to take the same path as the New Hampshire Republicans are proposing.  Governor Brownback pushed a massive scheme in Kansas in a misguided attempt to raise state revenues by cutting taxes - which fiscal experts agree simply does not work.

“Throughout the debate over business taxes, we’ve been told tax cuts are necessary to make New Hampshire more competitive and to boost its economy. Yet, as Kansas’ experience makes clear, tax cuts are no guarantee of job growth. Choosing tax cuts over investments in education and infrastructure will lead the state into a downward spiral,” said Jeff McLynch, executive director of the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute.

The similarly misguided plan being pushed by Republicans in Concord will hurt Granite State families and will eventually result in working families paying more to make up for the $90 million dollar hole in the budget.

“A misguided plan to cut taxes for Kansas businesses in the name of job growth resulted in a tax shift, which increased taxes on hardworking Kansas families. Lawmakers promised Kansans ‘pro-growth’ tax policy, but all this plan delivered was an increase in the number of families struggling to make ends meet, said Annie McKay, Executive Director Kansas Center for Economic Growth.

New Hampshire has many needs.  Our roads and bridges are literally crumbling, we have a growing heroin epidemic with no money to fund drug treatment centers, and the current budget proposal fails to fund the negotiated  State Employees contract.

Don't let New Hampshire fall into the same tax cut trap as Kansas!

Please send a letter to your State Senator and your State Representatives to pass a responsible budget that funds our needs and removes the tax giveaways to big business.

Below is the letter we have already written for you if you choose to send it.

Dear Representative,
I am a constituent of your district and I would like to talk to you about the upcoming vote on the NH Budget.
Our state is at a fork in the road, leaving us two options. Do we follow the same path as other states like Kansas that cut taxes on businesses only to see a tax increase on working families.
In 2012, the Kansas Legislature cut business taxes and now the State of Kansas is in a huge hole. The tax cuts failed to produce the economic gains needed to fill the hole carved out of their state budget.
Or do we pass a responsible budget with modest increases that will allow our state to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, combat the growing heroin epidemic, and give our state workers the pay raise they deserve.
I support Gov Hassan's veto as I believe that a much more productive budget solution can be and should be developed by our elected officials. I urge you to vote on Wednesday to uphold the Budget Veto.
Sincerely,
