Earth Month Senate Advocacy: Save Mass Save!

At the end of February, the House passed a massive energy omnibus bill (H.5175). This bill has gone through many iterations, and in part because of activist voices like yours, has a lot of significant wins. Unfortunately, there’s a giant poison pill that will cut $1 billion from the ~$1.5 billion Mass Save budget for 2027. This cut would effectively gut the state’s only energy efficient program which saves residents $3.51 for every dollar spent.

People need relief from high energy bills, but cutting Mass Save won’t get us there. If legislators are truly serious about energy affordability, they would take a look at the real culprit of skyrocketing energy bills, the profit driven utilities.

Right now, gas and electric utilities can use the money they collect from us to fund political activities like lobbying, advertising, and trade association dues. There are also no robust protections against utilities expanding expensive and polluting infrastructure, just to recoup the cost from us and charge a guaranteed profit on top of it.

Take action today and urge your state senator to add these crucial consumer protections into the bill and restore funding to Mass Save.

After you write your letter, make sure to RSVP for the Mass Power Forward May 12 Lobby Day.
