FRIDAY 10/11 - FINAL DAY OF ACTION: Support your 434 Leavenworth Neighbors!
DAY 4
Dear Community Partners & Allies,
For years, tenants at 434 Leavenworth have been trapped in the same cycle of corporate neglect—first under Veritas Investment, now under Ballast Investment (Brick+Timber). But today, we’re shining a light on the real power behind the scenes: Brookfield Properties, a global real estate giant that owns, operates, and develops office towers, retail centers, and 42,000+ multifamily units worldwide.
In December 2023, Brookfield took over 75 SF buildings (including 434 Leavenworth) in a foreclosure deal from Veritas—yet they’ve stayed silent while tenants fight for:
Drop evictions for tenants on rent strike
Language access so all residents can advocate for themselves
Rent credits owed and previously promised to tenants for uninhabitable conditions
Good-faith negotiations with the tenant union
Brookfield Properties own iconic properties like One Post Street, the Monadnock Building, and luxury apartments (The George, Presidio Landmark). They’re redeveloping Pier 70 & Stonestown—and even formerly owned Westfield San Francisco Centre.
But with great power comes great responsibility.
Our city doesn’t need another speculative investor profiting off vulnerable communities. Tenants care about their homes. Will Brookfield Properties care about their tenants?
