Tell Mayor Bowser and the Council: Fully Fund DC's LGBTQ+ Communities!

DC LGBTQ+ Budget Coalition

The DC LGBTQ+ Budget Coalition, comprised of more than 20 local LGBTQ+ organizations and allies, advocates for targeted funding to support LGBTQ+ residents across a range of programs and services, with a focus on marginalized groups including trans people of color, low-income individuals, those with disabilities, and migrants. This year, our priorities include Healthcare, Employment & Economic Equity, Housing, Safety & Community Support, and Civil Rights (see our full letter here).

As we enter a period of harsh attacks on DC's home rule and LGBTQ+ Washingtonians at the federal level, we must assert DC's right to autonomy and fortify the District's commitment to protecting and supporting our communities. The Coalition and its partners have consistently advocated for budget priorities that provide the DC government with opportunities to lead the nation in programming, services, and protection of civil rights. Given the challenging fiscal outlook for the District and looming budget threats due to the recent passage of the continuing resolution in Congress; Mayor Bowser and the Council must prioritize its most vulnerable residents. These critical investments must be protected—not just for the LGBTQ+ community but for the health and stability of the entire District.

The LGBTQ+ community in particular is poised to inject the District and the surrounding area with significant revenue through World Pride, which is projected to host hundreds of thousands of people from around the globe and generate millions of dollars for the local economy. While our communities are excited, we are also scared. As we face these uncertain times, the economic boost that queer and trans communities will provide should be used to directly support us here in DC, ensuring that we are resilient in the face of the challenges ahead.

During recent meetings with agency staff and Councilmembers, we have consistently outlined our concerns about the challenges our communities face in securing adequate funding and resources for DC's LGBTQ+ residents. Despite persistent funding cuts and resource constraints, many of our members continue to provide life-saving programming and services which not only serve LGBTQ+ communities but have lasting impacts that strengthen the city as a whole and enhance the safety and well-being of all its residents. These are necessary investments, it is time to ensure that these critical programs and services are fully funded.
