Home in Tacoma Phase 2: Trees are Critical Infrastructure!

We need the Tacoma City Council to pass the Landscaping code with the Planning Commission's recommended tree related amendments for Home in Tacoma Phase 2.

Trees are essential infrastructure, crucial for clean air, cool neighborhoods, and robust
stormwater management. Urban tree canopies slow runoff by intercepting rainfall and
allowing water to infiltrate the soil. A single mature tree with a 25-foot canopy can
manage stormwater from up to 2,400 square feet of impervious surfaces like roads and
sidewalks, helping to prevent flooding and decreasing the burden on stormwater
systems. Trees also improve groundwater recharge and filter pollutants when absorbing
water through their root systems.

Protecting our tree canopy isn’t about landscaping—it’s about equity, health, and climate resilience.
