Despite months of coordinated efforts to demand that immigrant families be included as part of federal COVID-19 relief packages, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Cory Gardner have not released any substantial bill that would include immigrants in the next COVID relief package.  

This negligence is impacting millions of families across our country and in our state, like Reydesel’s family. Rey tells his story to honor the undocumented domestic workers, and women cleaning businesses, hospitals and government buildings to protect us against COVID-19.

“I would like to share a story in honor of all the women cleaning businesses, hospitals, homes, and government buildings during the pandemic. My story is about my mother’s hands but it could be about your mother’s hands — the hands of women who are protecting us against COVID-19.”

Rey and his mother’s story highlight the cruelty of the first CARES COVID relief package that excludes thousands from the federal stimulus check. Our country cannot continue to deem immigrants ‘essential’ and deny them access to basic benefits and relief during this global pandemic.

“I want my mom’s hands to hold our diplomas, degrees, achievement awards, and her future grandchildren. Those hands made me what I am today. And they have endured a lot over the last 44 years of struggles — being a young mother, raising four children, and even crossing the desert so her children would not have to work on the cotton farms in Mexico like she did as a child.”

“Now it is time to use my hands to help unite the United States. I want my hands to protect my mom’s health, and the health of so many women cleaning up COVID-19 for the country.”

“I especially want to raise my hands for the thousands of undocumented women working, like my mother, who somehow are both essential labor for our country and called illegal and other names. Together we will recover from COVID-19 — in part because of the hard working hands of women and men cleaning and cleaning and cleaning. THANK YOU!”

Rey’s mom and other immigrant mothers, brothers, sisters, and community members are serving on the frontlines and deserve dignity and respect for their lives. Please join us and Rey in using your voice and hands to speak up and call on Senator Cory Gardner to include immigrants in the next COVID-19 stimulus package.

We must continue to fight and raise our voices and hands for our immigrant brothers and sisters. Our futures and ability to thrive beyond COVID-19 depend wholly on our ability to look out for those most vulnerable among us. No one should be left behind.

A pesar de meses de esfuerzos coordinados para exigir que las familias inmigrantes se incluyan como parte de los paquetes federales de ayuda COVID-19, el líder de la mayoría del Senado Mitch McConnell y el senador Cory Gardner de Colorado no han publicado ningún proyecto de ley sustancial que incluya a los inmigrantes en el próximo paquete de ayuda COVID.

Esta negligencia está afectando a millones de familias en todo nuestro país y en nuestro estado, como la familia de Reydesel. Rey cuenta su historia para honrar a las trabajadoras domésticas indocumentadas y a las mujeres que limpian negocios, hospitales y edificios gubernamentales para protegernos contra COVID-19.

“Me gustaría compartir una historia en honor a todas las mujeres que limpian negocios, hospitales, hogares y edificios gubernamentales durante la pandemia. Mi historia es sobre las manos de mi madre, pero podría ser sobre las manos de tu madre, las manos de mujeres que nos protegen contra COVID-19."

La historia de Rey y su madre resalta la crueldad del primer paquete de ayuda de CARES COVID que excluye a miles del cheque federal de estímulo. Nuestro país no puede continuar considerando a los inmigrantes "esenciales" y negarles el acceso a beneficios básicos y ayuda durante esta pandemia global.

“Quiero que las manos de mi madre sostengan nuestros diplomas, títulos, premios por logros y sus futuros nietos. Esas manos me hicieron lo que soy hoy. Y han sufrido mucho en los últimos 44 años de luchas: ser una madre joven, criar a cuatro hijos e incluso cruzar el desierto para que sus hijos no tuvieran que trabajar en las granjas de algodón en México como lo hizo cuando era niña ”.

La madre de Rey y otras madres inmigrantes, hermanos, hermanas y miembros de la comunidad están al frente y merecen dignidad y respeto por sus vidas. Únase a nosotros y a Rey para usar su voz y sus manos para hablar y pedirle al senador Cory Gardner que incluya a los inmigrantes en el próximo paquete de estímulo COVID-19.

“Ahora es el momento de usar mis manos para ayudar a unir a los Estados Unidos. Quiero que mis manos protejan la salud de mi madre y la salud de tantas mujeres que limpian COVID-19 para el país."

“Especialmente quiero levantar la mano por las miles de mujeres indocumentadas que trabajan, como mi madre, que de alguna manera son mano de obra esencial para nuestro país y se llaman nombres ilegales y de otro tipo. Juntos nos recuperaremos de COVID-19, en parte debido a las manos trabajadoras de mujeres y hombres que limpian, limpian y limpian. ¡GRACIAS!"

Debemos continuar luchando y elevar nuestras voces y manos por nuestros hermanos y hermanas inmigrantes. Nuestro futuro y nuestra capacidad de prosperar más allá de COVID-19 dependen totalmente de nuestra capacidad de ayudar a los más vulnerables entre nosotros. Nadie debe quedarse atrás.
