Invite your Councilmembers to the People's Hearing on Revenue 5/20!
The Just Recovery DC coalition is hosting a People's Hearing on Revenue on May 20th, and we need your help to make sure your elected Councilmembers attend. We are in the fight of our lives, and we need lawmakers to hear directly from DC residents on why the 2022 fiscal year is a crucial year to raise revenue for an economically just and racially equitable recovery.
Why are we hosting a People's Hearing on Revenue?
Revenue encompasses the money that DC collects from taxes, fines, and fees in order to invest in public goods and services, like schools, roads, affordable housing, and more. This year, the Just Recovery Coalition is petitioning the DC Council to raise taxes on the richest DC residents—those who have largely gone by unharmed economically by the pandemic. This approach could raise over $100 million in recurring revenue to pay for long-term investments in racial equity.
Every year the Council holds a series of hearings, called budget oversight hearings. Every DC agency has a hearing in front of a Council committee during which DC government officials and residents can testify for budget changes. But there is no stand-alone hearing for revenue, despite our requests!
We are hosting our own hearing on revenue and inviting Councilmembers to attend. We want our elected officials to hear directly from Washingtonians who have been directly harmed by the pandemic to make the connection between revenue and the lives of their constituents. Register for the People's Hearing on Revenue!
