LA City Council is about to break state housing law — to kill one project
LA City Council is expected to vote as soon as this Friday August 21st on Council File No. 26-0290 — a motion from Councilmember Bob Blumenfield built to kill one housing project he doesn't like, at the Woodland Hills Country Club.
AB 2011 says that if a city wants to strip a property of its eligibility under the law, it has to identify a substitute site so there's no net loss of housing capacity citywide. Blumenfield and the City haven't identified a single substitute site. They're not following the law, they're hunting for a loophole to stop one project a handful of homeowners don't want.
This isn't just bad faith, it's a legal liability. If the City moves forward without following AB 2011's own process, it's opening itself up to a lawsuit from the developer, paid for with your tax dollars, all to avoid building housing Los Angeles desperately needs.
LA is failing to meet its commitment to build over 450,000 homes this decade. Every month spent inventing new ways to block one project is a month the City isn't taking the housing crisis seriously.
