Demand Congress Stop ICE From Arresting and Deporting Children and Prohibit ICE Raids on Public Schools Now
ICE is seizing children nationwide, dragging students into federal custody because of their families’ immigration status. In Minnesota, multiple students were taken, including a 5-year-old, turning a public school into the front line of immigration enforcement.
Families and advocates report that children in ICE custody are being held in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. Investigations have documented children being denied basic hygiene, medical care, and adequate sleeping arrangements while detained by the federal government.
Even more alarming, ICE enforcement now includes raids at public schools. Schools should be safe spaces where children can learn without fear. When ICE targets families tied to schools, the result is immediate and lasting fear, as children learn that school no longer protects them from Trump’s immigration raids.
Congress has the authority to intervene. Lawmakers can prohibit ICE raids in and around public schools, restrict funding for family detention, and demand the immediate release of children from custody. These are choices Congress must make.
If lawmakers fail to act, more children will be traumatized, more families will be torn apart, and schools will lose the trust of the communities they serve.
