Protect marine life, fresh water, and human health - Ban the Bead in CA!

Everyday, Californians everywhere are washing their faces and brushing their teeth with plastic microbeads. Once these microbeads wash down the drain, they escape wastewater treatment and end up in our lakes, rivers and oceans by the billions. To combat this senseless pollution, 5 Gyres and a coalition of leading environmental groups have cosponsored AB 888, a bill that would ban plastic microbeads in California and move companies towards more sustainable alternatives like walnut husks and sea salt.

AB 888 has a ton of momentum moving into the final weeks of the legislative session. But it faces powerful opposition from beauty care giants Johnson & Johnson and Proctor & Gamble - both of whom want Californians to continue exfoliating with plastic. Their persuasive lobbyists are out in full force, spreading misinformation about the intent of the bill to legislators in the Capitol.

Last year, California’s microbead ban failed by one vote. In order to win this year, we need to demonstrate a groundswell of public support to CA lawmakers in order to overcome J & J and P & G and their army of lobbyists.

AB 888 will be voted on in the State Senate within the next week.

Please send a letter to your Senator urging him/her to protect marine life, fresh water and human health from plastic pollution and ban the bead!
