There are only about 400 North Atlantic right whales left in
the ocean and fewer than a quarter of them are breeding females.
Since 2017, almost 30 endangered right whales have been killed after becoming entangled in fishing gear or being struck by marine vessels.
These deaths are terribly costly to this species and are preventable. Strong and effective regulations on fishing gear and the adoption of ropeless fishing systems can prevent entanglements in commercial fishing gear–the primary cause of right whale injury and death.
