Recess Helps Kids Learn

MTA-backed legislation to guarantee our K-5 students at least 20 minutes of recess each day is stuck in the Joint Committee on Education. We need your help to keep the bill alive. Please ask your state representative and senator to urge the members of the Joint Committee on Education to report the bill out of committee with a favorable recommendation by Feb. 5, 2020.

The bill (H.426/S.330) is sponsored by Representative Marjorie Decker (D-Cambridge) and Senator Michael Rush (D-West Roxbury). It would mandate at least 20 minutes of unstructured free-play recess per school day for public school students in grades K-5. It would also prohibit public schools from decreasing the amount of time allotted for recess due to changes in standards or curriculum.
