Last week, Senate Democrats announced a breakthrough deal on historic legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, that would address inflation, climate change and skyrocketing healthcare costs. This bill will be a step in the right direction. We urge Senators to focus on getting this much needed support to families and not be derailed by any harmful anti-immigrant amendments that could be attached to this must-pass bill. Some Senators are using this moment to play politics with people’s lives by attempting to introduce amendments that would codify the deadly Title 42 policy, prolong the Remain-in-Mexico Policy and increase militarization at the border.

With Title 42 already kept in place by federal court rulings, there is no need to legislatively extend the policy. Bills and amendments that claim to temporarily extend Title 42 not only drive harmful, xenophobic rhetoric, but also impose such unattainable requirements that they would make seeking asylum virtually impossible.
