Renters need immediate support from Asheville City Council
Thousands of people have suffered significant economic losses and face the prospect of eviction. We’re joining with the Asheville Food and Beverage Union to call for immediate rental assistance, reallocation of Tourism Development Authority resources toward vulnerable residents and businesses, and a rent freeze and eviction moratorium for all public housing residents.
In addition, we’re calling on the Asheville City Council to revise its proposal to defer loan payments from affordable housing developers. We agree that those developers should be offered some grace, but only if they are similarly extending that grace to their residents in the form of rent deferrals. This is an opportunity for the City Council to take leadership in safeguarding those who are most endangered by the growing housing crisis.
