As the Senate is working to negotiate next year’s budget, Russ Vought, Donald Trump's head of OMB and architect of Project 2025, a known climate denier, has slipped in a poison pill: shutting down the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado calling it a “center for climate alarmism.” This center is a global crown jewel of science that helps us learn a great deal about weather and other critical emergency management and national security information – which matters to everyone. It is literally the next-generation of weather prediction systems critical for military and public safety operations.

Experts across the country are warning of the devastating impacts closing this center would have, including Space City Weather’s Meteorologist Matt Lanza: “I cannot begin to tell you what a bad, bad, bad decision this is. Objectively so. This will absolutely cripple and devastate weather research in the U.S.”

Help us save this essential center! Call your Senator and tell them to protect this National Center for Atmospheric Research and ask them to support Senators Hickenlooper’s and Bennet’s efforts to strip this provision from the Senate’s proposed budget for 2026.
