Say No to Trump's Deportation Agenda: Stop S.5
S.5 represents a dangerous expansion of immigration enforcement powers that will disproportionately harm immigrant communities, especially those already vulnerable due to systemic inequities in the criminal legal system.
This bill would:
- Expand mandatory detention to include individuals who have not been convicted of a crime, upending fundamental principles of justice.
- Fuel systemic racial targeting, as over-policed Black and Brown communities are more likely to face arrests and detentions, exacerbating existing inequities.
- Empower anti-immigrant attorneys general, like Texas AG Ken Paxton, to sue and overrule federal immigration decisions, opening the door to mass detentions.
- Endanger Dreamers and long-settled immigrants, putting them at risk of indefinite detention and deportation for minor offenses or baseless charges.
This is not about public safety—data shows that immigrants commit crimes at far lower rates than U.S.-born citizens. Instead, S.5 weaponizes detention as a means of family separation and fear, turning immigrants into targets of unjust detention policies.
We must take action to oppose this harmful legislation and protect immigrant communities from these unjust and draconian measures.
