Reduce Gun Violence against Sexual and Domestic Violence Survivors

Under current law, a person subject to certain protective orders is prohibited from buying or possessing firearms, and must surrender any firearms he possesses to 1) a licensed firearms dealer; 2) law enforcement; or 3) someone else legally eligible to own a firearm.  

However, as the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Action Alliance has noted, this third option can amount to a loophole that risks additional harm to survivors.

SB47 would close that loophole by providing that an individual who is required to transfer his firearms must submit a form to the court stating who the recipient is, so as to confirm that the recipient is at least 21 years old and does not reside with the offender. (https://vsdvalliance.org/)
