SF Board of Supes: Make Free City REAL

San Franciscans overwhelming passed Prop W to fund the Free City College initiative. Mayor Ed Lee and some members of the Board of Supervisors have been talking about NOT making Free City College happen, despite being supported by the voters last month with 62% support. Please take a minute to email them to prevent them from cutting this program before it’s even begun -- just copy and paste our draft message or use your own words. Tell them that it's essential to seed the Free City College Initiative now for Fall 2017! Send an email message to our Board of Supervisors by completing the box on the right.

Why San Franciscans need Free City College:

City College of San Francisco was free to everyone until 1984, giving San Franciscans the chance to go to college and achieve the degrees and licenses that we all know are the key to the middle class. Just as we established free universal K-12 public education long ago because we recognized that economic self-sufficiency and opportunity are only possible when you have a basic level of education, in today’s world, we know that a high school degree isn’t enough any longer.

To compete in the economic marketplace, some form of higher education is an absolute necessity. At an estimated cost of $14 million a year, we can reclaim the promise of free higher education for all in San Francisco and provide tens of thousands of San Franciscans with affordable higher education which means a chance to join or rejoin the workforce with necessary skills, to earn a place at a 4-year university, and unlock the doors of opportunity.

That is why the Campaign for a Free City College was born and successfully campaigned for the passage of Proposition W to pay for this program with new revenue obtained through a 0.25% increase to the transfer tax paid when luxury properties valued at $5 million and up are sold -- new revenue estimated to be more than enough to pay for Free City College at $45 million annually. 62% of San Franciscans agreed that this was the right thing to do and overwhelmingly passed Prop W just last month. Ask our Supervisors to keep their promise and make City College free for San Franciscans once again:

San Francisco must set the example and ensure access to quality education. We need Free City College for our City, its residents, and for our CCSF. With skyrocketing housing prices and high student debt, students often face choices between enrollment and rent, between textbooks and groceries.
Voters have shown they want to protect City College and expand access to higher education— tell our Board of Supervisors they cannot abandon that promise!

The Board of Supervisors will hear the measure on the appropriation of $9 million from Prop W revenues to fund Free City College on December 13th between 2:00-3:30pm at City Hall, Room #250. Join us to tell the Board of Supervisors that it's essential to fund the Free City College Initiative now for Fall 2017!
