In order to pass a bill to fund the government beyond December 22, Congressional Republicans need the support of at least eight Demcoratic U.S. senators. This gives Democrats significant leverage, which they must use to pass the DREAM Act of 2017.

All Democratic U.S. senators must oppose any bill to fund the government beyond December 22 that does not include a CLEAN Dream Act!

The Dream Act of 2017 is bipartisan legislation that would allow around 1.5 million U.S.-raised immigrant youth to earn lawful permanent residence and American citizenship if they:

  • Are longtime residents who came to the U.S. as children;
  • Graduate from high school or obtain a GED;
  • Pursue higher education, work lawfully for at least three years, or serve in the military;
  • Pass security and law enforcement background checks and pay a reasonable application fee;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the English language and a knowledge of United States history; and
  • Have not committed a felony or other serious crimes and do not pose a threat to our country.

Some Senators have pledged to not vote for any government funding bill that doesn't include the DREAM Act of 2017: Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Corey Booker (D-NJ). It is more important than ever that we thank them for their support for immigrants in this country, and that we urge them to stand strong in the face of enormous pressure to compromise or cave.

Making compromises could seriously endanger the lives of black and brown immigrants in this country, and we can not let that happen. We must have a CLEAN DREAM Act, which means legislation that creates a permanent solution for immigrant youth to remain in the U.S. without any added immigration enforcement or criminalization.

Republicans are looking to make long lasting changes to immigration policy in our country. They will try to make a "deal" to pass the Dream Act - one that further criminalizes and marginalizes black and brown people and leverages families and communities against one another. They will propose changes that allow increased discriminatory enforcement of people protected by the DREAM Act and those changes would threaten other immigration status categories like diversity visas and green cards.

Any compromise would further endanger black and brown communities and is unacceptable.

Sign and send a message to your U.S. senator thanking them for demanding the DREAM Act of 2017 be included in any government funding bill they support, and urge them to stand strong under pressure to compromise or cave.
