Stand with WV Working Families & STOP Senate Bill 528!

Please write the members of the WV House of Delegates Judiciary Committee and urge them to stand with West Virginia's working families and protect worker protections by STOPPING Senate Bill 528!

U.S. and West Virginia laws provide protections for employees. By allowing companies to reclassify employees as independent contractors, this bill would take those protections away.

What's at risk if SB 528 becomes law & employees are reclassified as independent contractors?

  • Workers' paychecks will shrink automatically because they will pay both the "employee share" AND the "employer share" of social security and medicare taxes.
  • Workers can lose Workers Compensation protection if they are injured on the job.
  • Workers can be discriminated against on the basis of race, nationality, religion, sex.
  • Workers aren't protected by Unemployment Insurance if they lose their job.
  • Workers can be denied overtime pay.
  • Workers can lose paid breaks or guaranteed meal breaks.
  • Workers can lose their rights to associate and organize through unions.
  • Workers can be compelled to work under unsafe conditions.
  • Workers can lose pensions, health insurance or other promised benefits.

Not only will workers who are reclassified as independent contractors be hurt, "good" employers will also be harmed by being put at a huge disadvantage when they keep bearing the costs of treating their employers respectfully by having to compete against those irresponsible businesses who've cut costs by treating their workers poorly.

West Virginia's working families are already struggling. The last thing we need is this terrible bill.

Read Rick Wilson's Gazette-Mail op-ed for a good explanation about how SB 528 will hurt working people.

Let's STOP the anti-working people Senate Bill 528!!

On February 24, the WV Senate passed SB 528 and forward the legislation to the House of Delegates.  On the 25th, House Speaker Hanshaw referenced SB 528 to the House Judiciary Committee, which means it must pass through that committee to proceed to the house floor.

We can stop SB 528 NOW if we can convince the House Judiciary members to vote against moving it forward!
