Stop the layoffs at CSU Dominguez Hills!

CSU Dominguez Hills leadership announced layoffs of Teamsters Local 2010 and CSUEU workers last week. President Parham and CSU leaders are making choices that threaten public higher education. We must fight these attacks on workers’ livelihoods and the effects they would have on students and our campus. Over a decade ago, similar cuts were attempted at CSUDH, but failed because faculty, staff, students, community, and political leaders united and pushed back.

The CSU system has billions of dollars at its disposal: California’s 2024-25 budget includes a significant net increase in funding to the CSU, the Trustees raised tuition, and the CSU has billions in reserves. Budget decisions are choices, and collectively, we need to demand better.

Instead of eliminating jobs for workers living paycheck to paycheck, CSUDH should consider:

  • Management Personnel Plan (MPP) bloat: CSUDH added 33 management positions in the past five years, increasing from 119 to 152. This expansion alone costs approximately $5 million annually in salaries—potentially $7 million when factoring in benefits.
  • Financial Surpluses: CSUDH has brought in more revenue than it has spent for seven consecutive years (from FY 2017-18 to FY 2023-24), with an average of $22 million in surplus revenue annually. Over this period, the university's total assets have grown by $154 million.

We, the undersigned, demand that CSUDH and President Parham do what’s right and rescind all of the proposed layoffs. The CSU can well afford to retain staff with their millions in reserve and the CSU’s billions. The loss of income to CSU workers can be devastating to entire families.
