Write your state legislators: Support the "La Salle Street tax"

Did you know that 2/3 of all corporations doing business in Illinois pay no taxes to the state? And  millionaires and billionaires pay the same percentage of their income as we do. That's not fair.

If you ever bought a house or got a mortgage in Illinois, you paid a tax on that transaction. But people trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade don't have to pay taxes on those transactions, even the ones for way more money than you or I will ever pay or borrow. That's not fair.

Illinois is swimming in red ink. We need more revenue. SB1970 would  place a tiny tax on the purchase and sale of investments through the Chicago Mercantile Exchange or Chicago Board of Trade. By tiny, we mean no more than $2 each from the buyer and the seller.

The governor and our legislators say the best we can hope for is some Grand Bargain where they'll cut spending on schools, higher education, and social services, expand the sales tax, and raise the flat rate for the income tax. That Grand Bargain is a Raw Deal for working families, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Tell those folks in Springfield that they work for us, and they need to start doing their job.  Write your letter now.
