Partisan actors fueled by special interests are acting to gerrymander the Texas Court of Appeals in another desperate attempt to hold onto power -- once again, targeting rural and urban communities.

The Senate Committee on Jurisprudence will be hearing Senate Bill 11 -- a bill that aims to control the judicial representation of Texans - on Thursday.

Particularly concerning are the aspects of the bill that will:

• Flies in face against Voting Rights Act by diminishing communities of color ability to elect candidates of their choice.
• Guarantees one party control in over 70% of the new courts
• Serious financial impacts for individuals attempting to seek justice.
• Forcing individuals and their lawyers to travel hundreds of miles across the state to attend appeals hearings.

We need your help to keep the Court of Appeals from disenfranchising rural and urban communities. Senate Bill 11 and its companion bill in the House, HB 339 and HB 2613, will take the current 14 Court of Appeal districts and merge them into 7 courts.

It makes sense that Texans want people from their communities representing them in their courts. Areas that are minority opportunity districts will be disenfranchised by Senate Bill 11.

This should outrage everyone - all Texans lose when we put partisan and special interest ahead of the best interests of our communities.
