Microchip company Micron Technology is constructing a new facility outside Syracuse — the largest in New York history and largest microchip fabrication facility in U.S. history. While this project presents an incredible economic opportunity for the region, it could have a substantial impact on the natural environment and community surrounding it.

Specifically, the proposed campus poses significant ecological risks due to the permanent destruction of large swathes of wetland habitat. Wetlands provide habitat for more than one-third of the country’s threatened and endangered species, filter pollutants, and buffer communities from flooding.

We have concerns the irreversible harm that Micron’s project would cause to the wetlands and endangered species located on White Pine Commerce Park (WPCP) and the lack of clarity regarding required mitigation for these losses. In addition, the loss of wetlands and toxic discharges from the proposed chip plant could have an adverse effect on water quality.

New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation is soliciting comments on the Micron's permit applications for its impact on wetlands, clean water, and endangered species. Can you submit a comment using the form on the right before September 1 to share your concerns?
