Tell Brookline school and town leaders to save K-5 World Language
On March 28, the School Committee voted to cut the entire K-5 World Language program, as well as four Literacy Coach positions. Community members and educators were stunned to learn that, starting next year, Brookline’s elementary World Language program would cease to exist.
It’s very simple: this is not what Brookline community members have voted for and funded.
We are urging concerned students and their families, educators, and PSB community members, to write to town leaders, urging them to fully fund our school system. In particular, our elementary World Language program that:
Aligns with our values, including our commitment to diversity and equity in hiring
Prepares our students to meet the challenges of an increasingly diverse and interconnected world
Honors the will of Brookline voters
Brookline has options for fully funding our schools and the public good, including:
Reducing the unprecedented increase to our reserves until the schools are fully funded
Using reserve funds to pay for excess utility costs that unpredictably burdened the school's budget
Carefully examining resource allocation within the school budget (including expensive outside consultants that are hired to assess programs that are then cut)
Urging the state legislature to fix the inflation rate cap problem as soon as possible
How can you help? We’re asking educators and community supporters to contact the Town Administrator, members of the Brookline Select Board, and members of the Brookline School Committee to demand a fully-funded school system. You can do three things:
Use this Action Network page to send an email to school and town leaders
Are you an educator? Send your email and share with your colleagues and Brookline community members
Are you a parent or caregiver? Send your email and share widely with your Brookline school networks
