Tell Concord Councilmembers: Vote NO on Higher Rent Increases & Unjust Evictions in Concord

Concord renters, your legal protections from high rent increases and unjust evictions (took effect in April 2024) are at a high risk of being gutted by the Concord City Council on Tuesday, March 25. This is because Vasona Management, the biggest corporate landlord in Concord, and the California Apartment Association, the biggest real estate lobby group in California, meddled in recent Concord City Council elections. Vasona Management affiliates donated to the newest Council member, Pablo Benavente, who has initiated this effort to weaken these protections for Concord renters. This vote to weaken renter protections will take place on Tuesday, March 25. But the good news is that you can do something now to stop this from happening. Don’t let corporations and multi-millionaires control what happens here in Concord. Send a quick email now by filling your information on this form and clicking “Send Letter” at the bottom of the next page. Take action to save thousands of dollars on your rent and stay housed in Concord.
More Information:
Why are Concord’s current renter protection laws important and what is the impact of weakening these laws?
Rent stabilization: Under the current Concord law advocated for by other renters and implemented in April 2024, your rent increase cannot exceed 2.5%. With the proposed changes, your legal annual rent increase would double to 5% per year. Right now, Concord residents, families, and seniors like you are struggling with the high cost of living, stagnant wages, and rising cost of housing, and every dollar counts for us. Now is definitely not the time for the City Council to allow landlords to increase rents even more.
Just Cause for Eviction: Under the current law, Concord renters, living in any type of building, cannot be evicted unjustly (ex. asking for repairs). However, under the proposed changes, the City would remove protections from unjust evictions for residents living in single family homes rental properties, hurting a third of Concord renters. Don't all renters deserve protections from arbitrary or retaliatory evictions, no matter what kind of unit they live in?
What can you do now to take action as a Concord resident?
Send a pre-written email NOW to Concord City Councilmembers using this page to tell them to vote against weakening the rent stabilization and just cause laws that protect renters like you and your family and/or neighbors.
Come out to City Council on Tuesday, March 25 and tell Council that their duty is to keep families housed and not to maximize profits of real estate investors! This is not only about keeping families housed, but also about corporate lobbyist control over Concord, undermining our city democracy in favor of millionaire interests.
