Tell Congress Hands Off Federal Employees’ Retirement and Merit Protections

Recently, the House of Representatives passed a budget reconciliation package with deeply harmful proposals targeting federal and postal employees. Passed on a party-line vote, these measures would force public servants to foot the bill for tax breaks for billionaires and corporations.
On June 13th, the Senate released a draft version of their budget package with additional attacks on federal workers and civil services protections:
- New federal hires are required to contribute 9.4% of basic pay to FERS to be at-will employees, or 14.4% to keep civil service protections, with an additional 5% to have union dues deducted from pay.
- Federal employees are required to pay a $405 fee to make a claim or appeal with the Merit Systems Protection Board.
- Unions are required to pay wages for employees conducting union business (official time).
- Unions will be taxed 10% on dues payments received via federal payroll.
- Allows the President to circumnavigate the constitutional authority of Congress by allowing POTUS to reorganize the executive branch without oversight or accountability for a period of 10 years.
These proposals are reckless, unfair, and punitive.
Take action now: Write your Senators and tell them to oppose any legislation that includes these anti-worker provisions. Federal workers and the wellness of the country should not be used as a piggy bank to fund tax giveaways for the wealthy.
