Tell Congress: No Dirty Pipeline Deals in the Debt Ceiling Bill

June 1 update - Last night, despite our our thousands of calls, letters and signatures, the dirty debt ceiling bill, now called the “Fiscal Responsibility Act,” passed the U.S. House. The bill they passed includes giving away the Mountain Valley Pipeline along with rollbacks to the National Environmental Protection Act and much more.

But there's still time to clean up the dirty parts of the deal and pass a clean(er) debt ceiling bill.

The Biden-McCarthy deal tries to force completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline by requiring the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to issue permits for MVP within 21 days and limiting judicial review of permits. Other parts of the deal try to force expedited permitting of energy projects by limiting the use of NEPA, and cutting safety net programs like food stamps.

Enter two amendments: the amendment by Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia to strip out the Mountain Valley Pipeline, and an amendment to undo NEPA rollbacks.

We're never too optimistic about the Senate, but we think the MVP amendment in particular can pass. Progressive Democrats like Senators Bernie Sanders and Jeff Merkley hate it. Republicans also balk because they don't want to do any favors for Joe Manchin’s re-election campaign.

Now is the time to squawk up. Email your Senators and tell them you support these efforts to clean up the debt ceiling bill, and strike out the MVP in particular. Enter your address to get matched to your members of Congress on the right, and we'll provide some talking points based on whether they're a Democrat or a Republican.
