Tell Congress Where You Stand on the Tax Bill

House and Senate Republicans recently announced an agreement on their final tax bill, and confirmed plans to begin voting as soon as Monday, December 18. That means NOW is our last, best chance to stop this harmful bill from becoming law.

Take action today. Write to your members of Congress, and tell them to put a stop to this deeply unpopular tax bill.

The tax bill would have harmful effects on people’s health care:

  • Add at least $1 trillion to the national deficit, creating short and long-term financing challenges that put Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security at risk. In 2018 alone, the tax package would trigger $25 billion in automatic cuts to Medicare. Unless Congress acts to waive these so-called “PAYGO” rules, the cuts would continue every year for the next decade.
  • Pave the way for even steeper cuts in the future. Lawmakers are expected to use rising deficits caused by the tax bill as an excuse to pursue entitlement “reform” as soon as next year—seeking significant “savings” from programs like Medicare under the guise of deficit reduction.
  • Jeopardize health coverage for millions. Additionally, the bill would repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, eliminating the mandate would cause 13 million people to lose health coverage, and millions more would face increased premiums. People over age 50, who are not yet eligible for Medicare, would be disproportionately affected by the disruption this change would cause across the health care system.

It’s not too late to stop the tax bill and protect our health and retirement benefits.

Pressure must be put on lawmakers in both the House and Senate to reject this dangerous bill. Their goal is to deliver a final bill to the President for his signature before the New Year. Congress must reject these flawed bills and rushed approach. We urge a fresh start, with a transparent and bipartisan process.

The only thing standing between Congress and the President’s desk is your voice. Speak out today, and tell Congress to reject this harmful tax bill and start over.
